Contestation of Contemporary Islam: Conservative Islam versus Progressive Islam

This article analyzes the articulation of Islamic thought in 2014 and 2019 General Elections Indonesia, both which were marked by efforts progressive conservative Muslims to dominate public spaces. Contestation was evident these political discourses, with advocating for moderatism, ethics, tolerance narratives inclusivism, pluralism, while disseminating extremism, formalization sharia law, intolerance exclusivism homogenization. The analysis questions continuity-discontinuity, motives, actors Muslim movements investigates challenges their Indonesia. result argues that massive religious organizations Indonesia articulate, internalize, institutionalize within educational institutions. encourages reckon countermeasure conservativism among elites whose exploit sentiments practical purposes.
